The upcoming schedule for the hawks is 2 home games. We play Drake and South Carolina State at home these are games we have to win then we play Purdue on December 29th at home so we have a stretch of 3 home games. Now the question is, is this team getting better I believe they are yes athletically they are going to be behind most teams but if you can play smarter then the other team you can win games. Yes this could be a long frustrating year for us and at times we are probably going to get blown out of some games but the key to this season is to push through the adversity and always compete as long as the team doesn't quite.
The ISU game I thought we played very well they just played better we got open looks we were getting into the paint and getting easy baskets to recap that game we lost 81 to 71
We shot 46% from the field
They shot 58% from the field which is lights out.
From 3 both teams shot 42%
They were 19 -28 from the foul ine
We were 8-11 from the charity stripe
We out rebounded them 34-30
We only had 12 turnovers which isn't a great number but it isn't that bad usually the 8-12 range isn't a bad number of turnovers.
Player stats
Cole 16pts 5 rebounds 6-9 from the field
Gatens 20 pts 6-14 from the field 4-8 3pt's
Tucker 8 pts 3-13 shooting 2-10 3pt's
Payne 15 pts 6-10 shooting 3-5 3pt's
Cougill 12 pts 10 rebounds 5-5 and 2-2 3pt's
Yes it's frustrating to lose to ISU and UNI but I think this team has improved offensively the bottom line is they got almost no help from the bench May attempted 3 three pointer and missed them all and Bawinkle never had a shot attempt which with his streaky ability is dissapointing we couldn't get him one shot.

Big 2 road games for Iowa Basketball
These next 2 games are going to show us if this team has improved I think we can see that they have played better at home vs VA Tech and Praire View it will be interesting to see how they respond on the road this week as they travel to UNI and IA State.
I think both of these games are winnable but we are going to have to shoot the ball well and run the offense threw the post with Cougill and Cole For the UNI game defensivily the keys to win are to keep Ahelegbe out of the paint, cover the open shooters and contain Cook and Egleseder down in the paint I would expect to see us double team if he gets low post position but Cole should be strong enough to handle him just not tall enough so he will need some help.
I would say the biggest thing for Iowa to do offensively is shoot the 3 ball well, work the ball down low and get to the foul line. Also they need to rebound because they can't afford to give up second chance points.

Iowa Vs Wichita State Basketball
Alright I am going to break down the key possesions in this game at this point Iowa has trailed since the Shockers took the lead and we have finally cut the lead to 7 after an Eric May 3 pointer.
WSU first possesion 49 to 42 We force Hannah into a difficult shot which he misses but Cole has the rebound slip right through his hands and Hannah picks it up and scores
51 to 42
Iowa first possesion 51 to 42 May is short on an open 3 but it was a good shot that he had confidence after just making one so still down by 9
WSU 2nd possesion Payne gets his 3rd foul and then a jump ball keeps it with the Shockers. Murray misses a 3 but another offensive rebound they do turn the ball over so the score is still 51 to 42
Iowa 2nd possesion 51 to 42 May drives to the basket and gets fouled goes to the line and makes a pair of free throws so we are now down by 7 51 to 44 right in this game.
WSU 3rd possesion They turn the ball over so still 51 to 44
Iowa 3rd possesion 51 to 44 on a 14 to 5 run Tucker tries to drive and travels bad turnover he had no where to go on the play.
WSU 4th possesion 51 to 44 We get another defensive stop still 51 to 44
Iowa 4th possesion 51 to 44 Payne has the ball stolen from him
WSU 5th possesion 51 to 44 Murray hits an open shot for them 53 to 44
Iowa 5th possesion May hits an open jumper inside the free throw line set up on the assist by Payne 53 to 46
WSU 6th possesion 53 to 46 Murray and 1 looked like Cole got there to take the charge especially since Murray lowered the shoulder so 55 to 46 he misses the free throw
Iowa 6th possesion 55 to 46 Gatens finds Cougill and he lays it in 55 to 48
WSU 7th possesion another offensive rebound they don't score so still 55 to 48
Iowa 7th possesion Payne is fouled but misses the front end of the one and one big miss we had the momentum if he makes 2 it is a 2 possesion game.
WSU 8th possesion We play good defense but another offensive rebound Williams scores to make it 57 to 48 so were down by 9
Iowa 8th possesion Gatens with a bad shot airball still down by 9
WSU 9th possesion They score a lay up on the block back down 11
Iowa 9th possesion May throws it away 59 to 48
WSU 10th possesion Hannah misses a 3 so we get it back but still down 11
Iowa 10th possesion Gatens draws the foul off a nice dish from Tucker makes both 59 to 50
WSU 11th possesion Bawinkle doesn't find the ball or his man they score
Iowa 11th possesion Tucker dribbles it off his foot 61 to 50 7:32 to go in the gam
WSU turnover
Iowa Gatens travels this is where they pull away
Murray and Stutz score back to back baskets and were back down 16 with 6 minutes to go game over so we could of won this game if you look at the key possesion we had a lot of opportunities to cut into this lead.
We had 5 turnover in this span of 12 possesions where the game was there for the taking.
They scored 4 points off second chance points which isn't a lot with all the rebounds they were getting and Payne missed a front end of the 1 and 1 basically we had a chance to win this game but we made too many mistakes in the key possesions in this game. We were down by 7 55 to 48 Payne missed the front end of the one and one and then we had 2 turnovers on consecutive possesions when could of cut into the lead. We then cut the lead to 59 to 50 and once again 2 more turnovers on consecutive possesions. Yeah I know we aren't that great of a team but I think we are going to look back at this game and see a lot of missed opportunities in a game we could of won.

Iowa Basketball
Well we are going to find out a lot about this team very early in the season because the early season schedule we play a lot of veteran teams including Texas San Antonio who we beat 73 to 67 last year in a closely contested came in Iowa City. Our second game we host Duquesne an experienced team should give us a challenge then we host Bowling Greene before we head to Kansas City and Play Texas in the 1st game of CBE classic. The second game we play will be vs the Winner or loser of the game of Pittsburg vs Wichita State. After these 5 games we will know how good this team could be or is.
Our first 5 games should tell us a lot about this team with a lot of new players I think this team has the potential to be very good. I think they have more talent this year with the addition of Cully Payne in the back court looks like he will be the starter at point guard plus getting Tucker back should do a lot for this team on the offense. I think this is going to be a breakout year for Cole who should average double figures in points and rebounds he has also added the outside shot to his game.
I'm excited for the season to get rolling and it kicks off on November 15th vs Texas San Antonio this should be an interesting year to see how much improvement we see from this team. They are more experienced this year and yes they need their young players to play well if were going to compete in the BIG TEN.

Iowa Football
Well we got by Indiana they gave us a scare for a while but we beat them and are still in 4th place in the BCS. Yes Stanzi threw 5 interceptions but nothing bothers this guy he came right back in the 4th and threw 2 TD passes to put us ahead for good. Wegher also had a big game with 119 yards and 3 TD's hopefully this is a sign of things to come. This is the last hurdle before we head to Columbus so the Wildcats can not be overlooked. Northwestern is that same team they always are they will spread us out and run and pass out of the shotgun, Kafka is a very good QB but he injured his leg so I'm not sure what his status is right now if he plays this becomes a more difficult game. He had them in the lead vs Penn St untill he got hurt then Penn State reeled off 24 points in the 2nd half to rout the Wildcats 34 to 13.
On Offense I think we should be able to run all over them they are banged up on the defensive line and Penn State ran for a lot of yards on them including one run by Royster where he wasn't even touched. WE need some style points so a big win over the Wilcats could help us out and this is a team that we could blow out as long as we don't commit turnovers like we did vs Indiana. I expect a big performance Stanzi this weekend and Wegher should have a big game. I think this should be a big win for us but if we overlook the Wildcats they could make this a close game and even pull of an upset so we have to come ready to play.

Hawks win 15 to 13
Wow what a win for the Hawks on Saturday night in East Lansing we went from thinking we lost to Ricky Stanzi leading a game winning drive and to top it off a TD as time expired. This team just finds away to win it not always pretty but they just win. Michigan State really played well on defense but on offense we did a nice job of running the ball with Robinson going over 100 yards and the line was pretty good on Saturday night. The Defense was awesome untill that final drive by MSU and the defensive line got a lot of pressure on Cousins and forced him to throw before he wanted to. Marvin McNutt had 2 catches and they were both very important to the win on the final drive he got the 1st catch that got a first down then the Biggest Catch of the game and a outstanding play call one on one McNutt 6 ft 4 vs CL Rucker and McNutt won that battle on the slant to win the game.
Now that we have got through 3 of our 4 road games we have two home games in a row then go on the road to play Ohio State. We did suffer a couple of injuries on Saturday as Dace Richardson broke a bone in his ankle, Greenwood was carted off but returned to the game in street clothes, Sandeman was knocked out and Robinson looked like he sprained his ankle but he said in the post game that he expected to play vs Indiana. The next 2 home games we have Indiana and Northwestern at home both teams are dangerous so we can't play like we have vs bad teams. It would be nice to see us blow someone out this week vs Indiana.

The Wisconsin Game
This was Ricky Stanzi's best game this year he was outstanding against the Badgers and the reemergence of DJK definitely helped the offense. We still couldn't run the ball like I would like but we were able to run it in the 4th quarter. The offensive line played a lot better in the 2nd half the 1st half the team did not play well but the defense kept us in the game and Murray's 48 yard kick was big to give us some momentum.
In the 2nd half the game changed after Speivey's pick we marched right down the field and scored on a good play by Moeaki and a great pass by Stanzi. The defense was lights out in the 2nd half they didn't allow anything they played great in the 2nd half and forced turnovers again.
This week is a new challenge we head to Michigan State for another huge Conference game. Michigan State is 3 and 1 we are 3 and 0 in the conference. This game is for the conference lead if we win this week we will be past 3 of our 4 tough road games. I don't think MSU is that good of a team but they have a lot of confidence right now we will have to play good to win this game. I want to see us make a statement this week and dominate a good Spartan team so we can stop all these close games. MSU has not ran the ball well all year so we should expect a lot of passing they have some talented wide receivers but I think our secondary is just a little bit better and will make enough plays for us to win.
I'm very excited that we are 6th in the BCS basically the only thing that matters is we need to keep winning and hope that Texas loses to someone. We will jump Boise State and Cincinatti because the Computers love us as they have us as 3rd we might even possibly jump Texas but the first thing we need to do is win at MSU this week.

Defense
The defense didn't play great but they played well enough to win the game. The Michigan running game really ran right down our throat they did a very good job of getting to our linebackers and too me it looked like we were overrunning the hole they would go through. The offense they ran was very hard to stop because they were cutting in to different lanes our defensive tackles weren't getting much penatration which caused a lot of open lanes for Minor to run through. The pass defense played very well for the most part they didn't give up any big plays and they kept Michigan from getting open too often, Spievey made the one mistake where he didn't get turned around in time but for the most part they did a good job.
The defense wasn't lights out as we had seen but they did enough to win now presents a new challenge a big back just like Minor but a power running attack of Wisconsin and John Clay. This should be a very physical game I think we have the advantage due to the fact that spread teams have been able to run on us but teams that try and run it right at us have tend to struggle. We are 6 and 0 and heading into a tough venue the thing we can't do is give them short fields personally they don't have great recievers but they do have a good tight end and John Clay is a good running back also Tolzien has been very good this year should be another run game on Saturday.

Michigan Game (Offense)
Well the offense for the most part played pretty well especially the passing game we really got it going and played good. The Running game struggled a lot of this was due to the 8 and 9 fronts Michigan was lining up in that is why there was so much 1 on 1 coverage. In the 2nd half the line started to get some movement and did a nice job of getting to the next level Robinson and Wegher couldn't find much room to run but Adam did have 10 carries for 70 yards. The passing of Stanzi was okay but the very first pass he had was just a terrible throw nothing else you can say about it there were two things I was dissapointed in were we were attacking there best corner instead of the inexperienced one and then we didn't capatilize on turnovers as I would of liked. We only got a field goal off of Hunters Interception, then we only got a field goal off the muffed punt these are turnovers we could of have scored into touchdowns and really put the nail in the coffin of the Wolverines.

We Won
Well it wasn't pretty but we did get the win over Arkansas State. Stanzi looked great at times and really played well except for 2 mistakes where he didn't have good footwork on the throw. The run game wasn't that effective today but they were stacking the box and we still ran for 124 yards so it's not like they completely shut us down. The defense looked good again not great like vs Penn State but good enough to win without Stanzi's pick 6 we win 24 to 14 and it isn't so close but we are 5-0 after 5 games this is what we wanted.
The Next 3 weeks will determine how special this season will be and how good this team is because we have Michigan at home this week 7 oclock national TV another statement game opportunity then we travel to Wisconsin and Michigan State Back to back this is the biggest stretch of the year. I personally don't think Michigan is that good as they did lose today at Michigan State but even though I don't like Forcier's swagger but he will not be intimidated next week so we will have to be ready to play no doubt Ferents will have us ready next week.
This is a big game hopefully Moeaki and Prater will be back and DJK will hopefully be able to play more next week too. We already made a statement with our win at Penn State this is an opportunity make another statement with a good Michigan team coming to town. This will be another fun week.

WOW What a win on Saturday night for the Hawkeyes enough can't be said about the way this defense completely manhandled Penn State except for one play. I was also very impressed with Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegher both played outstanding last night. The Play that Clayborn made is one of the best plays I've ever seen a DLineman make to block a punt when your in a punt return safe and take the ball all the way back for a touchdown completely changed the momentum of the game.
This might be the biggest road win of the Kirk Ferents era now we are 4-0 and come home to face Arkansas State in a sandwich game. We take care of buisness vs Arkansas State it sets up the big night game with Michigan where both teams could come in undefeated but we need to take care of Arkansas State first. Iowa once again didn't have Bulaga or Moeaki and they still controlled the line of scrimmage on the offensive side of the ball and the defensive side of the ball especially. I don't think there is a better defense in the country then the Hawkeyes WE moved up to 13th in the ap and were 17th in Coaches pull.

What Iowa must do on Offense to Beat Penn State
The most important thing the Hawkeyes need to do this week to win this game is they can not turn the ball over they must take care of the ball. The Penn State defense will be fired up and feed off of the crowd if we turn the ball over things could get ugly. Running the football will be very important not even running it for a 100 yards or any of that but we need to be able to gain consistent yardage on 1st downs on the ground so Penn State can all out blitz us in 3rd and longs. The crowd noise will be a huge factor but I think the fact that Iowa has a lot of veteran wide recievers we will be able to handle the noise. So basically we need to put ourselves in a manageble situation on 3rd downs like 3rd and 5 so we have the option to run or pass.
The last big thing Iowa must do to have a chance to win this game is they must make plays when one of our recievers gets open Stanzi needs to hit him or the wideout needs to make the big catch.
The biggest factor in this game may not be on offense or defense but special teams Donahue is an outstanding weapon for the Hawks and should be able to pin Penn State deep if the offense stalls. Daniel Murray has also been pretty solid only missing one field goal so far this year.
This Penn State defense is probably the best defense we will face all year and the bonus for Penn State is they might have both there stud linebackers back this weekend in this
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4494057
This will be a difficult test for the offense but I think they are up to it they have faced hostile crowds and this is a pretty veteran team so I don't think the crowd will effect us as if we were a younger team. WE MUST NOT TURN THE BALL OVER I reiterate this because we can't give them short fields.
We are getting closer to the big game this weekend and I am psyched.

The Big game is almost here this weekend at 7 o clock central time the Iowa Hawkeyes will head to Happy Vally to start Big Ten Season @ Penn State the number 4 ranked team in the country. College Gameday will be there and this will be a nationally televised game. Penn State is out for Revenge as the Hawks upset them last year with a last second field goal by Daniel Murray.
This years Penn State team is not the same team they haven't been tested at all this year and Evan Royster their star Tailback only ran for 100 yards 1 time in the 3 games they have played vs Akron, Syracuse and Temple. Darryl Clark is probably the best QB in the Big ten but they had to replace all of their wideouts and 3 offensive lineman so they haven't been tested on how good their offense will be.
The Defense for Penn State is one of the best in the nation so the Hawks offense will have to avoid mistakes and play very well. The big thing that the Nittany Lions defense could be missing is Sean Lee and Navarro Bowman are doubtful for the game this weekend. The defensive secondary for Penn State is also filled with young players I feel that we are the veteran team in this game.
This week Iowa looked awesome on defense this was the best we have played all year completely shutting down Arizona and the defensive line took over the game in the 2nd half. Adrian Clayborn was an absolute beast and we will need him to play this way vs Penn State. This Secondary was outstanding on Saturday and is much improved with Prater opposite of Speivey and that doesn't even include Greenwood and Sash who have been making a lot of plays this year.
Our Defense vs there Offense
The 2 key we need to shut down the run and make them one dimensional if Clayborn and Ballard can get in the backfield and disrupt the Penn State offense I really like our chances the other big match up will be. There recievers are relativly new so I don't know too much about them but they are young recievers vs our Secondary give us the advantage.
The one thing they do have on offense is an experienced QB but I think if we can get pressure on Clark we can force him into a lot of mistakes. We must get pressure on Clark or he could pick us apart on defense. The 1st Key is stop the run and make them one dimensional and the 2nd key is we have to get pressure on Clark.
Stay tuned for my keys for the offense to win this game.

Well the Hawks sit at 2-0 after a hard fought win over a good UNI team then a blowout over ISU. I think the Hawks have found there 1, 2 punch for now with Wegher and Robinson, Brinson also will get a shot to be in that mix too. I am very excited about the Arizona game this coming week we struggled with tackling a little and this will be the 1st time this year that we face a more traditional style offense instead of a spread offense. Arizona is a good football team and this will be a very hard fought game some stats for Arizona so far are.
Arizona's 2 wins came against Central Michigan 19 to 6 and Northern Arizona 34 to 17
They ran for 246 yards against Central Michigan with Grigsby there star tailback rushing for 118 yards on his own. They have a sophomore QB with very limited playing time this will be one of his first big road trips he has thrown an interception in both games so Iowa needs to shutdown the run and try and make Scott beat them because Arizona wants to run the ball.
This is a big game and will be a test as this is our last tuneup before the hawks head to happy Valley to open up the season. I think both teams will come up with the same type of gameplan on defense which is to stop the run and make one another one dimensional
